I hesitate because of the throughput to the system. The drive itself may run at internal speeds, but how fast can it talk to the computer? The connection type will dictate that, and unless you're using a very modern one, I doubt you'll reach the speed of an internal connection. I could be wrong, though; I don't know the numbers off the top of my head.
However, you said you're using a Mac Mini. I replaced my spinning drive with an SSD in my Mini last year, and it's worked perfectly ever since.
