Ok so two factor authentication uses both your password and a code sent to one of your trusted devices to sign into your Apple ID from a new device, to make changes to your Apple ID over at appleid.apple.com or you use the services over at www.icloud.com this replaces the security questions you are asked for when two factor authentication is turned off. With both the password and a unique code being required to sign in, this protects the data on your account, as well as your account overall, from being compromised.
