Hallelujah, hallelujah, finally!!! As far as I can tell, the problem is solved.

I went into mail preferences > accounts > mailbox behaviours, and change the 
Google trash folder to none. The archive folder is set to all mail, so that is 
good. I tested this set up by deleting some mail that I do not care about, and 
all seems to be working fine.
