Hi, Deedra: You can play any of the Ziph/Vorbis codecs, opus, flac, ogg, etc., using either mplayer or vlc.
Yes, Apple is, and has always been, quite allergic to these open source codecs, but I suspect this is one battle they do not win. I've found vlc quite accessible on my Airbook.
