I beg to argue your comparison to Windows. LOL!
If you are using Thunderbird, for example, in Windows, try openning or
composing a message, then do like you said and hit escape. Let me know how
it works for ya. LOL! Not meaning that to be at all snarky, but trust me. It
won't work, unless you have an extension addon that will allow the escape
key to work. Otherwise, you have to hit ctrl+W. So, that's not always the
case what you say comparing Windows.
Also with the Windows 10 Mail app. Same there. If you open a message, or
compose a message, if I recall, and I could be wrong on this, but it seems
like I remember that escape didn't work. Again, I may be wrong on that last
point, but I know! with Thunderbird, I'm definitely correct.

Hello Chris.
I wrote that in the early hours of the morning at the time.
What I was trying to say was if you are in a message or an open document, if
there is something that you don't like, pressing the escape key does
nothing. Let's say if you use windows, and you wanted to get out an e-mail
message that you were composing and you changed your mind, you could press
escape and the message would either close if you had not written anything or
you would get an alert with a dialogue box in it wishing for you to say yes
or no.

I have noticed that the escape key doesn't do very much on the Mac
anyway. Just thought about it in the light of our recent discussions.
