I don't remember all the wording, but I believe this message comes up when the
software determines you have a battery life of 80% of a new battery. Check the
official apple statements on battery status and perhaps look at the Battery
Health app in the App store. It is free for the basic version which sometimes
advertises other *Health apps and also has a pro mode that charts history of
charges.
In general I think no damage will occur if you don't replace the battery. but
please don't take my word for it.
