Actually, the free version works quite well. It locates a server in the country where the company is and uses that server when accessing said website. It works well for Amazon Video which requires US location server. My advice is to try the free version first and see if it will give access to what you want. If not (NetFlix has several countries for example), then the paid subscription becomes necessary.
So, technically, the basic complete service is free, and it works decently well for a free VPN server. Also remember, that type of service has significant ongoing costs which they need to cover.
