Hello Paul, I understand your goal.
At first glance, I can suggest 2 options: 1. Change your Apple ID to your desired email address, assuming it has not already been taken. 2. And this is what I have done on many occasions, continue to use your gMail account SMPT server while using your iCloud account's Incoming server. In this way, assuming you are using a client such as Apple Mail, MS Outlook, iOS Mail, you can customize the return email setting in the SMPT area and receive all of your mail to your iCloud account. I suggest this because I am not certain if iCloud will allow you to use a customized, non-iCloud email address. It may be possible, but I've never done it. This is definitely the kind of thing that is best handled by advanced users. There are other solutions but they go far beyond the scope of this forum.
