Chris,

Where you bought the product has nothing to do with Apple support. If the part 
is defective and less than a year old, no question that Apple will replace it. 
Also, the part you are talking about is so insignificant that Apple might still 
replace it. I have been in the Tyson's apple store where somebody brought in a 
apple charger where the insulation was completely coming off. The Genius 
instructed the client on how to wrap the cord so that there was less   
likelihood of fraying and then replaced the charger tjust this once for free.  
I also brought a 2009 MacBookPro to the Apple store in 2012 after I had dropped 
it and the hinge had broken. Apple replaced the hinge and display for free. 
Apparently they recognized a weakness in that models hinges. So, don't make any 
assumptions about what Apple will support. They are not L. L. Bean who will 
give you back money for a 15 year old bag that has a whole, but they stand by 
the quality of their products.
