That was my thought as well. I like the idea of iCloud Drive, but I don't see a way to get the books from there into iBooks. To be fair, I can play them right from the iCloud Drive app on iOS, I just can't import them into iBooks for background playback, keeping my place, etc. I'm thinking iTunes is my only hope, sadly.
