Yes its good to find this out and file it away in the dusty archives of our minds. I think it was Skype that did this to me but its been a couple months now. And this may explain why I did not see this with Pages as I added it to the dock very recently.

From E.T.'s Keyboard. . .
Many believe that we have been visited in the past.
  What if it were true?

Thanks, Jonathan! That was exactly the problem. I had a folder called
iWork09. It's gone now. :)

Thanks again for the tip. It is nice to have an explanation for what
was going on.
Cheers,
Donna

I believe that older versions of iWork were located in the iWork 2009
folder under Applications and not directly in the Applications folder.
So, check if you have a a folder called iWork or iWork with a version
number or year. I expect you have such a folder.

Best Wishes,

Interesting. Have never had that happen before. There are worse
things, of course, I was just curious as to what would cause that.

to download the update this morning, I went into the applications
folder and checked the date on the pages app. It was the most
recent date, which suggested that the update had been successful.
And, when I opened it from the Applications folder, I was able to
open and edit all my documents. However, when I tried to open
Pages from the dock, I still got the error message that I needed a
newer version of pages. I deleted the Pages shortcut from the
dock, and created a new shortcut from the Applications folder. So
all is well, but I have two questions. Why didn't the shortcut in
the dock update? And, since the old shortcut seemed to be opening
something, do i now have two versions of Pages on my Mac? I don't
see a second version in the Applications folder.
