Sounds like you have customized verbosity settings. Open the VO utility, go to Verbosity, and you should find a checkbox labeled something like "custom verbosity options" (I'm not at my Mac so can't check the wording). That should be checked, and after it should be a bunch of event types. There's typing, menus, reading, and plenty more, each with a popup button of voice options. Change all these how you want to. If these instructions aren't quite right, I'm sorry. Again, I'm not at my Mac to check.
