Hi, Actually, it sounds like something's going on with the external HD. When they get bad sectors on the HD, it makes the drive work harder and slower and can often slow down your entire system. If the MBA works fine without the drive connected, and if you can confirm it works fine with a different drive connected, then the culprit is that external.
