Hi, If you prefer to use the method that you're used to, then you only need one extra step. After cmd-o to open the message thread, press cmd-shift-up arrow to stop interacting with the top message, then VO-right once to have VO read the next message, VO-right again for the next , VO-left for the previous and so on. cmd-w to close the thread.
