Thanks Jeff. I did some more poking around the site and see that
Newer Tech. I am going to look at this some more as a different backup
solution which currently are WD Passport drives.

Hi Just putting in my two cents here. I've gone through many $10 to
$20 usb drive enclosures only to find that after a year or so they are
dead. I bought one from OWC called something like Newer Tech. Its a
little bigger than your usual 2.5" enclosure but its brilliant! You
move a switch on one end, which opens a swinging door, just drop in
your drive (7mm up to 12.5mm thick) and close the door and it just
works! It costs about $99 if its still available on macsales.com. Also
its really fast on usb 3.0 and the whole enclosure is aluminum. Also
if you're looking for thunderbolt macsales.com is probably your best
bet too, followed by lacie.com. Although not sure if lacie sells
enclosures.

Faster has some caveats. What kind of drive are you putting in that
case? If it's some kind of spinning disk then USB3 will probably keep up
just fine. Those can hit 120-180MB/s, well below USB3's theoretical max
of 640MB/s. Thunderbolt 2, by specs, is four times faster than USB3 but
more expensive. If you are putting in a spinning disk that can't
saturate a USB3 connection then Thunderbolt isn't going to make it any
faster. Probably the only use case where Thunderbolt would matter is on
some kind of drive array or speedy flash drive.

Thunderbolt is the better option with the mac books faster data transfer

And cheap becomes expensive. Thanks for the recommendation. I added
the USB 3 model to my wish list on Amazon. Nut sure yet what I will do as
the current data now exceeds the old drive.

These things are dirt cheap so there's piles of them around. My wife
upgraded her MacBook with an SSD and we bought the Other World
Computing kit which included the special screwdrivers and an external
drive case for the old drive. Their USB 2.0 case by itself is $US15.75
and USB 3.0 is $US18.75.

That should be your high-water mark. You can find tons of cases on
Amazon for $10 from companies you never heard of, so who knows if they
are any good. Still, USB cases are a commodity so you might just take
a chance on one and see what happens, especially if you already have
Prime. Here is a random USB 2.0 2.5" case from "Orico" for $8:

Hope this helps.

I am considering this to install the old Mac drive that I replaced

good choice to look at?
