Ask John Podesta if 2 factor authentication is more trouble than it’s worth.;)
That’s a pretty reckless statement. For we who store things like credit card
numbers, personal files, and so on and so forth do you really just want a
password between you and it? I strongly and I mean strongly suggest everyone
run and don’t walk and enable 2 factor authentication. That’s my opinion
however based on seeing the damage caused by having a single password only with
no really strong protection in place. The codes in 2 factor are very very hard
to guess (almost impossible), in combination with a password you’re even more
secure and even if your password is compromised your account is still safe and
secure behind that second method of authentication.
If you really want to be secure you use some of the hardware based or
application based for we blind users RSA clients that provide nice long strings
that change every minute. The RSA secure client was very accessible and good on
the iPhone and worked well with things like Pulse. Even the 6 digit code stuff
like Google and Apple use though is very very secure.
To be fair, Matthew may be right for the type of data he’s storing. If
for example he doesn’t store financial information or personal files or access
accounts he’s concerned over from that device he well may be right. On the
other hand, if you have any of this content you should really consider it. As
I always say only you can value your data and in our example here possibly
Matthew has a legitimate lack of need if for example the data isn’t of value or
if he keeps things isolated. I use it because I keep documents I want to keep
secure. I also secure the data on the local side as well with encryption so
it’s not an easy target. We really need to be careful about security. Things
that might have slid a few years back are just to dangerous to ignore today as
it really is a different landscape. As always though, the choice is your own
for your own data, value it carefully.
