I use Word on the Mac just because I’m more familiar with it, having used it on
Windows for nearly 20 years. You have to make some adjustments for apple
keystrokes, but it is usable. Item chooser is a good way to get to the ribbon
controls. Some of them you work with by VO-shift-M and other’s you just have
to interact with, but hints do say when you need the extra step. One extremely
annoying problem I had was that when switching to and from the app or sometimes
even using functions within the app, the document would jump back up to the
top. I finally discovered that Word is best used with cursor tracking turned
off. The down side is that sometimes VO will not be where you want it for
context related options like correcting spelling or grammar, but you can use
the VO to Keyboard focus hotkey, which I still forget the sequence for, to get
it in sync or briefly turn cursor tracking back on. I tried setting up an
activity to turn it off when in word, but it caused my computer to hang when
waking up from sleep. It’s disconcerting when some things don’t work as
expected because tracking is off, but it beats running Windows.

To the original question, I can’t compare apples to apples (forgive the bad
pun) since I never installed the Mac version of Outlook, but that one will come
down to personal preference provided accessibility remains constant. Outlook
is the king of ways to organize and flag your mail. At work where I’m forced
to used Windows, I employ these features to manage my inbox as a to-do list so
that I don’t have to flip to different screens to manage my day. Mac Mail
can’t touch that. However, overall I prefer Mac mail at home for it’s unified
inbox since I have multiple email accounts. A combination of reminders and a
service called followupthen.com keeps my home life on task.
