Hmm, Could this be done with Audio Hijack or Sound Flower? Basically have one
of those apps steal all sound and route it to /dev/null? I guess another
possible solution would be to create another sound output device controller and
go into VoiceOver Utility and re-route VoiceOver output to that device. This
would allow other sound output to occur but limit VoiceOver output. I expect
that if the desire is for editing sound on your Macintosh or giving a that you
would also want a quick way to route sound to the no sound device and back to
default sound device.
Perhaps though I am thinking too much into the problem and all the original
poster needed was the mute functionality.
