Hello Donna, To turn off the preview pane in Mail, navigate to the horizontal splitter, route your mouse to it with VO-Command-F5, then double click with the mouse button/trackpad button/trackpad/number 5 on numpad.
The important thing is to make sure that the mouse is on the horizontal splitter.
