A new malware threat has been spreading rapidly over the past 24 hours
with several instances of the threat reported to CSIT staff. This
particular threat is a sophisticated phishing scam leveraging Gmail
contacts to replicate itself.
The threat presents itself as an email message notifying the recipient
that a Google Docs document has been shared with them. The message
appears to come from a contact known to the recipient and includes a
link to the shared document. If message recipient clicks on the link,
they are taken to a web page disquised as the Google logon page where
any credential they enter are collected.
Once Google credentials have been collected the malware uses those
credentials to access the contacts and mailbox in order to replicate
the original malicious mailing yet again. Hence the rapid spread of
the threat.
Google has taken actions to mitigate the threat - such as taking down
fraudulent web pages and blocking compromised Gmail accounts.
Nevertheless, Google users have been warned against reflexively
clicking on links to shared documents regardless the apparent source.
