Hi, We need more info to give a proper answer. Some older iMacs won't update past 10.7 Lion, others won't update past 10.11 El Capitan. If your friend goes under the Apple menu, to about this Mac, and lets you know the processor speed and the amount of RAM, we can start from there. There's more info that could be gathered, but that should do for now.
