There was a long thread about this in the archives if you care to read the history but the short version is that the current Minis will perform horribly if they can't detect a display. Used to be you could trick it into thinking you had a screen hooked up by using the Apple video to NTSC adaptor but that no longer works. Now you either have to have a VGA terminator or an actual display connected. In the thread you can find links to instructions on making or buying a terminator but if you have access to an old junky display laying around that could end up being cheaper than the buy route.
