You might not even need to use time machine if the file is still present in 
your system. Was the file edited using textedit? If so, then there should be a 
mini-time machine interface in the editing window.

If not, then instructions for using time machine have been given before on 
list. I personally have never tried this. The couple of times I needed to pull 
something from time machine when I was not migrating to a new system, I used 
the finder and scanned the backup disk to the backup directory to the system to 
the date or something close to that.

I believe there is a way to go into menu extras, activate time machine, and 
then use a scroll bar to pick a date.
