Yeah it's a known issue with the watch os and earpods,

 I can say it will work better when IOS 11 is released.

I can now go on to my watch and and Bluetooth  tap my pods to connect to them 
from the watch so it is working in the new release of IOS.

 So give it time.

Hi guys:
I have issues connecting airpods to apple watch. When I choose airplay and my 
airpods apple watch says failed to connect. I have to power cycle the watch 
each time. When they finally get a connection, they keep switching between my 
iphone and apple watch. Is there away around both issues?
