Macintosh computers with solid state disk drives will sometimes perform
activities while asleep. This is called Power  Nap. Look for it in System
Preferences Energy Saver.
The summary below the check box reads:
While sleeping, your Mac can back up using Time Machine and periodically
check for new email, calendar, and other iCloud updates
