Hello Mark, I hope that wherever you live, and wherever you are, you are having a nice weekend.
Before asking my question, please let me once again tell you how much I enjoy many of your postings on the list. I believe that they perform a real service to all of us. So here’s my question: You may have seen my recent posting on the list about the Kindle app and how one might copy text from a Kindle book into a document that I am creating. Since I am team-teaching a course, I sometimes need to site short passages from a book that we are discussing. Thus far, I haven’t received any feedback, and that is okay. However, the matter is somewhat urgent for me. If you are familiar with Voice Dream Reader, you will know that performing such an operation is reasonably readily accomplished. In the past, after I have purchased books from the Amazon store, I have asked a friend to remove the DRM so that I could import the books into Voice Dream Reader. While my friend doesn’t at all mind helping me, he isn’t always available when I need material. I have no desire to pirate material, nor do I wish to act irresponsibly. I have only had the DRM removed from books which I myself have purchased, and I do not share these books with other people. All of this having been said, I am wondering about the appropriateness of asking list members if they know of an accessible program that removes DRM from eBooks, not Audible or other audio books. Perhaps there is a Unix utility or something like that. I would appreciate your thoughts, and understandably, I will abide with whatever you decide is appropriate. The last thing I want to do is ask a question and get preached at by someone on the list who sees him or herself as a pillar of moral rectitude, if you get my drift. On a totally different subject, I am wondering where you live and what you do for a living. As for me, I grew up on a farm near Chicago, was mainstreamed into the local school system, got a degree in German at the University of Illinois, came to Austria, where I have lived since 1976. For better or worse, I’m starting to become an old, yet very lively, geezer. Professionally, I have worked with several companies and organizations in the blindness field, and I have also been a freelance translator and interpreter. I have three daughters, all of whom are in their 20s, and I am married to Regina, who is a registered nurse at a private hospital here in Vienna. Our three children and one grandchild are all bilingual. Regina and I always speak German with one another, but we each speak our mother tongue with the kids. Well, Mark, that’s probably more information than you might have wanted, but since we occasionally interact through the list, I wanted you to know just a little bit more about me. My very best to you with thanks in advance, Mike -- The following information is important for all members of the Mac Visionaries list.
