Hi Gary,

The only time a similar situation happens to me is when Mail is still 
uploading/downloading messages.  I assume you have an imap account setting 
chosen so it means that Mail is sorting out your messages by matching them with 
the data base of all your messages.  Forgive my lack of technical vocabulary.  
So I wonder if you left Mail open for a long while, whether the situation may 
rectify itself.
