Wow. Could you think of some setting that I might have messed up to break that 
functionality on my system?

I'm on OS 10.6.2. It has been that way ever since I got this Mac with 10.6, 
though. Maybe it was something I messed up early on? One of the first ways I 
started to learn about the computer was with Mac Help, and I immediately 
noticed that these back shortcuts didn't work. I thought that maybe Apple just 
hadn't implemented them in the viewer for the help system.

I just went to Mac help and clicked on Network, share, and go online, and I 
press backspace and it went back to the previous page.  I also clicked on, 
Learn the basics about your Mac, and backspace worked as advertised.
