I recommend everybody learn about spotlight. If you are looking for an application it finds it, if you are looking for a document it can usually be found. I can even find the most recent e-mail messages from E. T. that I have not discarded b by using spotlight.
Basic operation is to type the spotlight startup keystroke usually command-space and then type in a word or two. 1. If you type vermin it will say terminal application and then you can hit return to start terminal. If you type 47km VoiceOver will say 29.2 miles calculator icon. If I type Abby I get back "procedures for using FineReader OCR.docx, - iCloud Drive, Documents icon completion selected" (I do not have Abby installed on my computer ) The search functionality built into finder and mail applications is actually just a specialized version of Spotlight and there are command line tools to get the same information as the GUI tools.
