We may have fiber optic out here, not sure. Never tried VPN though I
sort of looked into it.

Simon, upon Scott's recommendation, I got the Nighthawk AC1900 dual band a
bit over 2 years ago. I chose not to get a triple band for it was another 100
bucks.
Its been trouble free and the web interface is not too bad.
