Usually when this happens to me it is because I didn't really have something selected, or else keyboard focus was somewhere compeltely different from voiceover focus.
If you notice this right away using the command-Z keystroke should restoer you to prior to the paste. I could make a 1 line AppleScript to put either a empty information or else a single space in the clipboard but I don't think that would help much.
