Try highlighting the drive itself in disk utility, be sure that you are 
selecting the actual drive, not a volume on the drive. Then choose erase and 
choose a guid partition, you can choose mac OS extended or Mac os extended 
journaled for the format. This should partition the drive for use on the Mac.
