I can think of two possibilities:

1. The OS has decided to verify the drive before providing access to it. This 
might especially be the case if you unplugged the drive before it was 
completely ejected the last time it was used. I believe a system dialog does 
appear saying that this is occurring.

2. The external drive is encrypted and the password for the drive is not in 
your keychain. So somewhere there is a prompt asking for the drive password.
