It seems to be a High Sierra issue. If the drive is nit visible in
Finder, one cannot eject it. However it will be seen in Dish Utility
but still cannot be ejected. If I do not forget, I will disconnect the
hub before start up then reconnect it.

Well, it could b that the external media got corrupted because you
ejected it before all the data blocks had been written, or it could
just be that the computer got confused.
In any case, try real hard to eject your media first. Open finder hit
command-shift-C to bring up a list of attached devices and find your
external media and hit command-E. Then you need to wait until the
device disappears from the list.

I have been using a new USB hub to connect devices to my computer.
While connecting a USB thumb drive, finder only sees the thumb drive
until I remove it without ejecting it. After that, finder does not
list the drive once it is inserted, but it does give me an error
message to eject the drive first before removing it.
It doesn't matter if the drive is inserted directly or through the
USB hub, but this seems to happen after the first eject error
involving the USB hub.
Why is this happening?
