One: you can select multiple non-contiguous items with the 
control-option-command-return keystroke. Once you have all the items selected, 
you can use standard commands like drag, copy, delete. 

For your second question: I believe a, there is some kind of first letter 
navigation in the mail application, I can’t remember if it works for senders, 
subjects or both.
There is also if you interact with a row of the list of messages and then move 
over to the subject column. Then use the up/down arrow keys without VO it 
should just read the subject of the message you have now selected.

The search functionality is also quite useful in Mail. (except on my wife’s 
computer where it does not work).
