Hi Wayne

You can press Command + L on the item for which you want to create an alias.
You will then need to copy that item to the desktop if that is where you want
your aliases to appear.

However, regarding your HD, you can have it appear on your Desktop by
selecting 'Hard Disks' which you will find in the 'General' tab of Finder
Preferences under the option 'show these items on the Desktop':

1. Navigate to the Finder
2. Press Command + semi colon to open Finder's Preferences. (This key
combination will open preferences in all apps except System Preferences).
3. Navigate to the 'General' tab within the toolbar
4 Under 'Show these items on the Desktop', check the box that says 'Hard Disks'.

HTH
Best wishes
James
