Unfortunately, I don't have any direct fix for your problem excpt to suggest trying either the list or column views. Also, have you reported this to Apple Acessibility? Finally, I wonder if the "lock up" issue is more of a graphical one than a Voice Over one? The Mac is very graphical, I wonder if there is a way to turn off or at least limit the eye candy, as it does not impact upon many of us on this list.
