Tim was spot on. Just give the router more time to boot up before
starting the Mac. I was powering both on at about the same time.

Sounds like either your Mac was already on when the router started up,
or the Mac started up faster than the router. Two ways to stop that
message are to just restart the Mac so that it will get a new DHCP
lease from the router, or you can go into System Prefs, Network, then
to the Advanced button. Select the DHCP tab from here and press the
"Renew DHCP Lease" button. This should clear up any confusion.
