Hi Anders,

The only way to do this is to move your entire Home folder to an external 
drive.  The iCloud Drive itself is mirrored within your Home folder and there's 
no facility to redirect its location.  You can, though, check the box to 
optimize your Mac in the Documents pane of your iCloud Drive options.  This 
does work well.  I have a 500 GB SSD in my MacBook Pro, and between iCloud 
Photos, and my various Desktop, Documents and other app data, I have 1.3 
TerraBytes in my iCloud Drive.  My MBP maintains just over 100 GB free all the 
time while it's keeping things optimized.
