When there is an update for them, it is first downloaded to your phone automatically. Then, when you are using your airpods, it is pushed to them. That is the way I understand it, hopefully somebody will correct me if I am wrong. I think mine have been updated three times since I got them in December, 2017. You can find out what version is currently running, I think, in settings, general, about, if not, in the section about them under bluetooth.
