If they are serving up the files via FTP then you should be able to connect with any FTP client you like, which should also handle asking you for a username and password. If they are sharing via Windows file sharing then you can connect as a Windows client using SMB, the Windows protocol for file sharing. Just do connect to server from the finder (command-k) and then use the URL

smb://serveraddress/shareName

where you put in either the DNS network name or IP address of their server and the name of their share. It will prompt you for the username nad password to use. I connect to Windows fileservers this way all the time.
