I don’t know the relative costs of things, but Ink Jet printers do better when they are used fairly regularly. Since the ink is liquid but needs to be fast drying I understand that it can clog the printhead and/or dry out if not used regularly. With a laser printer, the toner is a powder that sticks to the drum and then is sealed with heat, so there is no ink to dry out. Also, although my HP system has a fairly extensive touch panel, most of those functions can also be done via a web connection or the print driver when downloaded from Apple. I get alerts on my computer when the ink is low in our family printer even if another family member is printing. I expect the same is also true of other vendors, but I do not have any experience with them.
