Thanks to all for your replies. Sean, I had forgotten about the Open at Login. Option for apps on the dock, and since both mail and messages were there, that would have been excellent! What I wound up doing in System Preferences, after clicking the lock to allow changes, was to click the Add button, then go to the toolbar and do a search for mail, then messages. Both apps now open up on startup, which is exactly what I wanted.
