In general Apple has controlled the hardware/software package so
everything just works. The downside is that when you want to use a
'whatever' brand drive it can be hit or miss whether the Apple drivers
will recognize it. There have been folks who hacked the drivers to
support more 3rd party hardware but that often seems to break with some
update or other down the road. So the best bet is to get something that
works with the existing drivers. That means probably sticking to known
mac vendors and/or limiting searches to make sure the item says it works
with OSX. Not saying this is the only choice, but here is one from Other
World Computing for $65
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/VLU2SD22X/
That seems to be about the going price for these things anyway.

Hi
Can you use an external USB dvd-rw drive with a macbook?

my blog is at http://jkenn337.klangoblog.net (updated frequently).
Tired of Microsoft Windows and paying thousands for screen-readers?
try out NVDA, get a mac--, nvda--for Windows, or try out and switch to
grml, Ubuntu, Vinux, or knoppix-adriane Linux desktops. Knoppix ubuntu
and vinux-cli-max are the most accessible for beginners. also try
vinux-gui and encourage those at www.cherrypal.com
<http://www.cherrypal.com> to use windows-xp and nvda knoppix-adriane
Vinux-cli-max or grml so all blind people can have an accessible computer.
