It's not hard to do this without meaning to. At least, that's what happened to me at one point fairly soon after I first got a my Airbook. I went crazy for some time trying to figure out what happened to my speech.
The three finger tap is a useful feature. But, it's also a lurking trap for the innocent. I suppose I'm now of the opinion we should all have three finger tap drummed into our brains right along with learning about Command F5.
