So,      I tried this today and  had  no difficulties using the Braille 
display. I am using it with a fairly recent version of the firmware. Check your 
firmware version by having the Brilliant not connected to any device and scroll 
forward with the right thumb key.

I did absolutely no configuration on the Macintosh to get this to work. I 
suggest you create a new user account on your Macintosh and try using the 
display with that account. If there are no issues with the just created 
account, I would suggest blowing away your VoiceOver settings. (Obviously make 
some kind of backup.)
