Interesting – thanks. I’ve used and definitely like Emacspeak under Linux.
Running Emacs from a terminal with Emacspeak and with BRLTTY controlling the
braille display is undoubtedly the best text editing experience that I’ve
encountered on any platform.

BRLTTY for Mac used to be (presumably still is) limited in that it requires a
patched version of GNU Screen in order to run – not to mention complicated to
install and may not work these days.

Well, there’s always Emacspeak, for Emacs. It works with the GUI version of
Emacs even, so you just have to turn VoiceOver off and just use it. Or you can
use TDSR, a terminal screen reader for the Mac that is miles ahead of VoiceOver.

When I last looked, TextMate was the most accessible text editor for the Mac.
However, it hasn’t been updated for quite a while, and I’m wondering whether
there is anything else that should be considered nowadays.

My needs are somewhat diverse – editing of LaTeX, Markdown, HTML, occasionally
JavaScript, Python, or other programming languages. Integration with Git
revision control is desirable.

Emacs or Vim in a terminal would be fine, were it not for the awkwardness of
using the Mac OS terminal application with Voiceover.

Updates welcome.
