Hi Simon,An update from High Sierra to Mojave would not happen overnight, but
incremental updates have the possibility of updating overnight. With Power Nap
enabled, your Mac will check for updates, check Mail and such when it is
sleeping. Yes, normally, you do have to click the Restart button, but the
downloading and such can happen. There are also dialogs that pop up that, if
confirmed, will do the installation overnight instead of while you're trying to
work. By the sounds of it, this probably wasn't the case since Petrus says
that the updates are still available for him.

If it did just start speaking while he was away, then it likely wasn't the
"Mute Speech" trigger either. I'm guessing that it was doing something in the
background that was making it wake up slower. I've had that happen on my 2017
MBP occasionally where it takes a bit of prodding to wake up, sort of like a
teenager :). Usually, I just click the Trackpad, VO left/right a few times,
and touch the finger-print sensor a few times, and it does eventually wake up.
Maybe after 20 seconds or so, which seems like eternity. when I'm in a hurry.

Hi Tim,

I believe Petrus’s machine would have been running Mojave already but may be
not the latest version.

But why would it be installing while asleep?

I would have thought it started up first and then prompted the installation
being in progress.

Hi,

It sounds like it was doing a big update and you just happened to open your
laptop in the middle of the process. If it was the Mojave update, then, yes,
it was a big one. When this sort of thing happens, Siri will be ineffectual.
Try turning on VO the old fashioned way. If I recall correctly, you have a
unit with the TouchBar. So, to turn on VO, hold down the cmd-key and press the
finger-print sensor/power button three times quickly. If the Mac is busy, VO
may take five seconds or so to turn itself on. If it's quiet, then regular
volume up actions may not work, use VO along with the plus sign to increase
volume.

Hi all,
Not sure if any one can give me a possible explanation for this as I can’t
really give you much information. I opened the screen to my MacBook this
morning and was faced with silence. I asked Siri to turn voice over off and
back on again that didn’t help. Anything I pressed on the keyboard came back
with a donk noise. I got my iPhone and opened Seeing AI and pointed it at the
screen, the main menu was on the screen and seeing AI told me there was 3 new
updates in the App Store. My Mac remained silent for about 10 minutes and
suddenly I was able to log in and now it is back to normal. I did go into the
App Store to install the updates and it asked me for my Apple ID password that
it normally doesn’t do. So I am suspecting the Mac was performing some function
that it didn’t want me to over ride. And I suspect it had something to do with
the updates?
Now I enjoy the song “the sound of silence” but not on my Mac.
Sorry for the long email.
