A further feature that may be useful is focused inbox, which attempts to
filter out mail that you're less likely to find interesting. You can
train it to identify what's most important to read. I suspect
effectiveness will vary according to the individual user's needs and
effectiveness in training it.
As an aside, I'm writing this message in Thunderbird running on Linux,
so I do have experience that encompasses several operating systems
(mostly Mac OS, iOS, Linux and Windows currently).
