Carbon Copy Cloner shines in this regard. CCC was not only ready for
Catalina but it was ready for Mojave last year.
CCC creates a hidden read-only volume. I have not encountered any
issues with this.

Hello, I am just starting to look at catalina, and will probably read
the Take Control book before I upgrade, especially since I have migrated
parts of my system since OS 9 days. That being said, I did hear on the
that SuperDuper does not yet work with Catalina. I am not sure of the
details, but the newer OS does mount some files as read only, as an
extra step in protecting core system integrity. Another feature that can
cause issues for backup software is in environments where a computer is
being used for both personal and work related items. Catalina has the
ability to have a home directory where parts are managed by a corporate
MDM server and parts are indicated as local to the user. So for example
if your Office 365 files are owned by the MDM / work license, they will
be on a separate partition with its own encryption key that is shared
between you and the company. If the company decides to disable your
access they can only remove the MDM controlled disk partition and
licenses not your personal files. I am probably not describing all this
very well, but it is designed to allow a computer to have both
corporate and personal security to co-exist on a single machine.
Best wishes,

I have a 2013 Imac and was thinking of formatting my iMac before
upgrading to Catalina. My iMac has so much junk on it, I should
reformat before I upgrade to Catalina. Before I start I am planning to
do a Time Machine backup, a SuperDuper backup, a Back Blaze backup and
disconnect all external Hard Drives with my Hub. Is their away to do
the format my 1.1TB Fusion Drive and install of Catalina using Terminal?
